During the heyday of the Venetian Republic, Doges Palace was the most important building in Venice. Within its walls, the Doge and his counsellors governed the city and created the most modern and liberal state in Europe. The open architecture and grand public rooms are a testimony to the unbeatable power and immense wealth of the Republic, but the building also housed a secret world closed to everyone but a few trusted men of the Republic behind the walls of the elaborately decorated rooms. This fascinating walking tour of the Doges Palace will introduce you to both the public rooms and the secret chambers.
During the first part of the tour, view the lavishly decorated public chambers featuring works by Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese and many others. Cross the Bridge of Sighs and visit the palace’s famous prisons. Accompanied by an expert guide, hear about the infamous Council of Ten and also learn about the diverse roles played in society by the Doge and his counsellors. Afterwards, visit the secret inner sanctums of the palace where you will discover the secrets of the Venetian Republic.
See the Chancellors Office where a multitude of Secret documents were kept and then head to the gruesome Torture Chamber where enemies of the state would be tortured before the state inquisitors. From the torture chamber we head up to the I Piombi Prisons, so called because they lay directly below the roof of the Doges Palace. These wooden cells would be intolerably hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter months. Also visit the former prison of Casanova, the famous lover.
